Kraamzorg – Maternity nurse at home

The Dutch postpartum maternity care at home is unique in the world. Apart from the Netherlands, there is no other country in the world where women receive a nurse who supports them the first 8-10 days after birth. The maternity nurse will guide you and your partner how to take care of your baby and helping you with (breast) feeding.

Kraamzorg during labour and birth

If you have a homebirth, the maternity nurse will guide and support you during labour besides us. Furthermore she assists us during the delivery and is there to support you and your partner. After the delivery, she will stay for a few more hours and take care of you and your baby. If you give birth in hospital, you will receive care from the maternity nurse from the moment you are home again.

Prenatal consultation by the kraamzorg at your home

Usually, someone from the maternity care agency will come to your home between 30 and 36 weeks of pregnancy for a personal intake consult. She will provide you with information and ask questions about your situation at home. You can also indicate personal wishes. If you gave birth before, the intake is often by telephone.

Register with the maternity care already after your dating scan. Do this as early as possible, preferably when you are about 12 weeks pregnant, but no later than the 16th week. This will give you the best chance that you will receive the number of hours of maternity care you need. It may happen that you get fewer hours when it’s very busy, for example during holiday periods or during a baby boom. You always receive the statutory minimum maternity care: 24 hours spread over 8 days.
