FAQ

How does an ultrasound scan work?

A pregnancy ultrasound scan sends sound waves through your womb to create a visual image of your baby, placenta, and uterus, as well as other pelvic organs. It allows us to gather valuable information about the progress of your pregnancy and the health of your unborn child. During the scan high-frequency sound waves are being transmitted through your womb that bounce off your baby. A computer then translates the echoing sounds into video images that reveal your baby’s shape, position, and movements projected on the wall to allow you to visualise what’s happening inside you.

When is my first ultrasound

When is a vaginal/internal scan necessary?

Befroe 10 weeks of gestation, a scan is usually performed internally as the pregnancy is not visible with a normal scan via your belly. It can also happen that an internal scan is indicated later in pregnancy. For example when it’s needed to check if the placenta is inserted too close to the cevrix.

Is a scan covered by my health insurance?

Your health insurance covers three ultrasounds during the pregnancy: the dating scan in the first trimester, the anomaly scan at 20 weeks and a positioning scan at 35 weeks. Furthermore there could be a medical indication which allows you to have more ultrasounds, to check the growth or position of the baby. These ultrasounds will also be covered by you health insurance.

What are the costs of additional scans?

Your health insurance covers three ultrasounds during the pregnancy: the dating scan in the first trimester, the anomaly scan at 20 weeks and a positioning scan at 35 weeks. Furthermore there could be a medical indication which allows you to have more ultrasounds, to check the growth or position of the baby. These ultrasounds will also be covered by you health insurance. Additional scans upon requests are not covered by insurance.
